When our longtime client Tina from Hampden, MA called to set up her regular septic cleaning, that’s when we found out she’d just started chemo for breast cancer. During our visit we gave her system a good, thorough cleaning and chatted about a few simple steps we could take to help keep everything running smoothly during her treatment.

Septic systems need good bacteria to break down waste, but strong medications like chemo drugs can mess with that balance and wipe out the bacteria, making your septic system l

ess efficient and causing solid waste to pile up faster than usual. The tank itself won’t get damaged by chemo, but when the bacteria are off, you can end up with extra sludge, thick buildup, and even partially treated water reaching the leach field, which isn’t good for your yard or the environment.

Clinical home‑care instructions often advise flushing twice and taking extra hygiene precautions for the first 48 hours after each infusion because active drug residues are excreted in that window. For septic households, those same periods are when bacterial stress may be greatest, and thoughtful system care can make a meaningful difference.

Municipal advisories and health resources echo that chemotherapy drugs can harm “friendly” tank bacteria, so households on septic systems should plan ahead rather than wait for symptoms like odors, gurgling, or backups.

For most breast cancer patients, external-beam radiation therapy does not make body waste radioactive, so there are no radiation-related concerns for septic systems, issues remain strictly biological. The primary risk to your septic system comes from chemotherapy drugs and other medications that can disrupt the beneficial bacteria in your tank.

If you’re going through cancer treatment, stick to the basics and pay extra attention to what goes into your septic system. Along with your usual best practices, get your tank pumped within a few weeks after your last chemo or medication session. This helps clear out lingering drugs and solids and helps your system return to its normal routine.

Use septic-safe products: Opt for mild, septic-safe cleaning products, avoid bleach and harsh chemicals that can further harm helpful bacteria.

Spread out water use: Avoid running several loads of laundry in one day or overusing water at once. Spacing out usage helps the septic system work more efficiently during a time when bacteria might be under extra stress.

Ever wonder why some septic systems are raised above the rest of the ground?

With the elevated water table in many homes in Wilbraham, Hampden, Ludlow, and Monson, coupled with the increased rainfall this year, it is strongly recommended to schedule a thorough assessment of your septic system.

Some septic systems need to sit higher than the surrounding ground for a simple reason: groundwater. To work properly, the leach field must be installed at least four feet above the seasonal high groundwater level so the sand and soil have enough depth to filter wastewater before it returns to the environment.

Even in these conditions, the goal is to build the system as cleanly and naturally as possible, shaping and grading the area so it blends into the yard rather than leaving an abrupt, “ugly” mound whenever the site allows.

In this case, the site was excavated down below the groundwater to reach a strong layer of sandy soil that allows water to move through it easily. That soil choice matters because it supports effective filtration and drainage. If poor or unsuitable soil is left beneath the system, water may not pass through as it should, which can cause the system to back up or fail.

Overloaded septic systems often fail for two main reasons: too much water entering the system and harmful chemicals disrupting the biology that makes treatment possible. When a system receives more water than it was designed to handle, wastewater doesn’t have enough time to settle and separate in the tank. Solids can get pushed into the leach field, the soil can become saturated, and the system may show obvious warning signs like plumbing backups, slow drains, sewage odors, or wastewater surfacing on the ground.

Septic systems rely on naturally occurring bacteria and other microorganisms to break down waste. Certain substances can disrupt this biology, including harsh disinfectants, solvents, paints, pesticides, antifreeze, and excessive amounts of bleach. In some households, strong prescription medications can also contribute to this problem, especially during intensive treatments such as

, because medication residues pass through the body and enter the septic tank.

To protect system performance and extend its lifespan, manage water use and what goes down the drain. Fix leaking fixtures, spread out high-water activities (like laundry) over the week, and direct roof and foundation drains away from the drain field. Just as critical, avoid flushing or dumping chemicals, grease, wipes, or other non-biodegradable materials, and use septic-safe cleaners in moderate amounts.

Given the elevated water table in many hill town communities in Wilbraham, Hampden, Ludlow, and Monson, and increasingly unpredictable seasonal weather that can bring continuous rainfall, it’s recommended to schedule a thorough septic system assessment to help identify early warning signs of potential issues before they become costly problems.

This particular property presented a challenging work zone, which required careful planning and precise equipment operation. The access to the backyard was extremely limited, forcing us to load and operate the truck over a stone wall while working beneath active power lines along the street. Situations like this demand a high level of skill and communication so that the work can be completed safely while protecting nearby structures, utilities, and landscaping. Our operators maneuvered the equipment in tight quarters, maintained safe clearances from overhead lines, and protected the existing stonework and driveway, all while staying on schedule.

Coordinating with the engineer and town officials was a critical part of keeping this septic installation on track. Throughout the process, we stayed in close contact with the designing engineer to confirm elevations, tank placement, and leach field layout, making sure the system matched the approved plans. As the work reached key milestones, we met with the town inspector on site so they could verify that the tank, piping, and leach field were installed correctly before backfilling. By the time the job was complete, both the engineer and the town inspector were able to sign off, allowing the certificate of compliance to be issued in time for closing.

Once the underground work was finished, we shifted focus to restoring the yard so the seller was not left with a torn-up lawn on the day of the sale. The entire disturbed area was covered with fresh screened loam, carefully graded, and raked smooth to create a clean, uniform surface. Good finish grading is important not only for appearance but also for proper drainage away from the home and septic components. When the grading was complete, we hydroseeded the area so the lawn could begin growing back quickly, helping the property look move‑in ready for the buyers.

Hydroseeding is one of the most effective ways to bring a yard back to life after an excavation-heavy project like a septic installation. In this process, we blend grass seed, fertilizer, water, and a fiber mulch into a slurry that is sprayed evenly over the prepared soil. The mulch helps hold moisture against the seed, protects it from erosion and washouts, and encourages fast germination, which is especially important on new grades and leach field mounds. Compared to traditional hand seeding, hydroseeding produces a more consistent stand of grass, fills in bare areas more reliably, and gives homeowners a thick, vibrant lawn in a shorter period of time.

The original metal pipe had deteriorated at the bottom over time, weakening the structure and allowing water to wash out material beneath the driveway. That erosion created a dangerous pothole and made the area unsafe to drive over.

The entire removal and replacement was completed in a single day, so the homeowner could regain safe, reliable access to their driveway without unnecessary disruption.
